Merzouga or Zagora: Which Sahara Desert Trip Should You Choose?

Short answer: choose Merzouga if you want the iconic Sahara – the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi – and you have at least 3 days. Choose Zagora if you only have 2 days: it is much closer to Marrakech, the drive through the Draa Valley is beautiful, but the dunes are smaller. Here is a side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

Why travellers love Merzouga

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange sand dunes in south-east Morocco. Watching the sunset from the top of a dune, riding a camel to your camp and waking up for sunrise is the picture most people have of the Sahara. The trip is longer, but the road is part of the experience: kasbahs, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. See our 3-day Merzouga itinerary for the full programme.

Why Zagora is a good alternative

Zagora is the gateway to the Draa Valley, one of the longest palm-filled valleys in Morocco. A 2-day Zagora tour crosses the High Atlas, visits Ait Ben Haddou and reaches the dunes in time for a camel ride and a night in a camp, then returns to Marrakech the next day. The dunes are smaller than in Merzouga, but the trip is relaxed and perfect when time is short.

Our advice

  • 2 days available: Zagora.
  • 3 days or more: Merzouga, without hesitation.
  • Travelling on to Fes: the Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes route avoids driving back.
  • Only one day: Agafay for sunset, or Ait Ben Haddou for the kasbahs.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga has the big golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and is the classic Sahara experience, but it needs at least 3 days from Marrakech. Zagora is closer and fits a 2-day trip, with smaller dunes and palm-filled valleys on the way.

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?

Zagora is roughly 360 km from Marrakech, about 7 hours by road over the High Atlas and through the Draa Valley.

Is the Agafay desert a real desert?

Agafay is a stony desert of hills and plateaux about 45 minutes from Marrakech. It has no sand dunes, but it is a great half-day or sunset outing if you do not have time for the Sahara.

Can I sleep in a desert camp on both trips?

Yes. Both the Zagora and Merzouga tours include a night in a desert camp with dinner and a camel ride.
